FAQ

FAQ – Sodium-Ion Hybrid Battery

1) What is a sodium-ion hybrid battery?

A sodium-ion (Na-ion) battery is an alternative to traditional nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) packs used in many hybrids. It uses sodium-based chemistry and modules designed to integrate with compatible hybrid vehicles.

Key characteristics (general):

  • Uses sodium-ion cells (no NiMH potassium hydroxide electrolyte).

  • Designed for high power delivery suitable for hybrid assist/regen use.

  • Engineered to fit specific vehicle applications (see compatibility).

Note: Chemistry and pack architecture differ from OEM NiMH. Always confirm fitment and follow installation guidance.

2) How does it compare to the original battery in my hybrid?

Our sodium-ion modules are engineered for hybrid duty and can offer the following in appropriate applications:

  • High power capability: Up to ~300 A peak current in internal/lab testing under controlled conditions for select applications.

  • Potential efficiency benefits: Calibrated systems may enable increased electric assist; actual MPG impact varies by vehicle condition, driving style, load, and environment.

  • Weight: Some applications may see a reduction in pack weight versus certain OEM NiMH assemblies.

  • No core return required: You reuse your original case/enclosure (when applicable), so there’s typically no core charge.

  • Electrolyte profile: No KOH NiMH electrolyte; follow the SDS for handling/disposal.

Results depend on vehicle model/year, software, state of health of related components (cooling fans, relays, wiring), installation quality, climate, and driving patterns.

3) Is my vehicle compatible?

Sodium-ion module kits are available for select Toyota, Lexus, Nissan, and GM hybrids.
Check fitment using our Compatibility Tool on the product page or contact us with your VIN and model/year at tech@mynewbattery.com or (435) 669-0020.

4) Do I need to be a professional to install this?

Professional installation is recommended. Many experienced DIY owners have completed installs using standard tools and our instructions, but:

  • Hybrids contain high-voltage systems that can cause serious injury if mishandled.

  • Follow all OEM and product safety procedures, including PPE, lockout/tagout, and torque specs.

  • We can assist with installer referrals where available.

5) How long will the battery last?

Service life depends on usage, thermal management, installation quality, and environment. In normal use, sodium-ion modules are engineered for long-term hybrid duty and may match or exceed typical expectations for comparable packs. We avoid promising a fixed lifespan because real-world conditions vary.

6) What warranty is included?

Every purchase includes a 2-Year Limited Warranty (unlimited miles) covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal use. For optional extended coverage, see our Platinum 10-Year plan.
Please review the full terms, exclusions, and claim process on our Warranty page.

7) Why haven’t I heard of sodium-ion before?

Sodium-ion is an emerging mainstream chemistry gaining adoption due to material availability and evolving performance characteristics. We validate our modules through design reviews and bench/vehicle testing appropriate to each application.

8) Is this battery safe?

Sodium-ion cells are known for a stable thermal profile and do not use the KOH NiMH electrolyte. That said, any high-energy storage system requires proper handling:

  • Follow the SDS, installation manual, and OEM safety procedures.

  • Ensure pack cooling paths/fans are clean and operational.

  • Dispose/recycle per local regulations—do not incinerate or puncture cells.

9) Do I need to return my old battery?

No core return is required for sodium-ion module kits that reuse your original case/enclosure. You may keep your original modules or recycle them locally. We can provide recycling guidance on request.
